Meet the Team: An Interview with Robert – Large Format Print Specialist at Pointmedia Creative
At Pointmedia Creative, delivering bold, high-impact, large-format print is what we do best—and the people behind the press are at the heart of our success. In this month’s Meet the Team feature, we’re shining a light on Robert, one of our senior large-format printing operators within our Production Department, whose experience, attention to detail, and passion for the print process are key to the success of every project that rolls off the press.
We sat down with Robert for an interview to discuss his job and have a quick chat about his love for print and how he helps ensure every visual we produce is accurate, vibrant, and delivered to the highest standard.
Understanding the Role in the Team: Working in Large Format Print
Q: Can you describe your role at Pointmedia Creative and what a typical day looks like for you?
Robert: “I work within the large format production team, where we handle everything from vinyl wall graphics and exhibition displays to window wraps and floor graphics. My role is a Print Operator at the company. I come in and start my day by getting the machines up and running so they are all ready for what is ahead. My next step is looking at all the plans for the day and selecting the right order in which the jobs should be completed. I make sure that I have all the correct materials that I need prepped for the entire day’s workflow. Then all the files must be ripped correctly, tailored to each machine. I operate our main machine, the Vutek LX3 Pro, which on an average day I run most of the jobs through, while also using the Epson and Summa machines, making sure they are all running smoothly and up to the highest standards and quality. At the end of my day I need to start closing down all the machines and running maintenance checks, which involves cleaning the machines and the print heads with a special type of fluid and making sure the machines are fully functional for the following day.”
Proud Projects & Print Achievements
Q: What’s one project or moment you’ve worked on here that you’re especially proud of?
Robert: “Last year we did some huge 3x2m Foamex panels for the University of Stirling‘s Swimming Pool Rebranding Project that looked fantastic but required a lot of work and manpower to run through the machines correctly. At the end of the day we managed to achieve our objective, and they were produced to a very high quality. Every panel looked pristine even with the large output from the machine and the large quantity of boards that were requested by the customer, so I was ecstatic with them.”
The Passion Behind the Printer
Q: What do you enjoy most about working in the printing industry, and what annoys you the most?
Robert: “As I work behind the scenes in the company, I enjoy seeing all the new creative ideas from different customers early and before they are released to the public, offering me the unique benefit of getting a small sneak peek at their new exciting range of products and designs coming out. What annoys me most in the industry is when a job is changed last minute after putting all the effort in and the majority of it has already been completed, rendering all our efforts meaningless and having to unfortunately start again with the job.”
Growth, Learning & Evolving Job Knowledge
Q: What changes have you noticed in the industry, and how has this impacted your role?
Robert: “The biggest difference I have noticed in the trade is that there is a lot more digital print knowledge needed and digital requirements needing to be met in order to operate the machines at the highest of standards and achieve our goals, as technology in general is also getting better and better. Especially because I also started in screen printing, so the shift towards digital for me has been even more dramatic. The change towards digital coincided with me joining Pointmedia Creative. My first few months in the job were more focused on prep and support, mostly learning the equipment and materials. Over time, I’ve gained experience with multiple printer drivers, colour matching, RIP software, things like that. I’ve become more confident in helping troubleshoot issues and have also developed my ability to have more of an eye for design consistency and layout alignment, which is a crucial aspect in modern large-format printing.”
A Question on your Future
Q: Where do you see yourself in five years time?
Robert: “Hopefully still here at Pointmedia Creative, and I hope the business as a whole has become more successful and has a knock-on effect, making all the staff more successful in the process.”
Asking Robert, A Personal Touch
Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself?
Robert: “I love to watch American football (the NFL) with all my friends, often staying up late to catch the games. I am a passionate supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs. It is the only sport I am into.”
